Auto & Trades Garage Program

The Auto & Trades Garage Program at Iron Trail Workforce Foundation is designed to open doors for individuals seeking meaningful careers in automotive repair, mechanical trades, and hands-on technical fields. Built on a foundation of mentorship, real-world practice, and community impact, this program gives participants the chance to gain industry-relevant skills while directly serving the people of New Mexico.

Inside our fully equipped garage, trainees learn the fundamentals of automotive diagnostics, repair, maintenance, and safety. Instruction is led by experienced technicians who guide participants through everything from engine and transmission repairs to brake systems, electrical troubleshooting, suspension work, welding, fabrication, and shop operations. Each trainee learns how to use professional tools, read technical diagrams, follow OEM procedures, and deliver high-quality repairs consistent with industry standards. Whether students pursue careers in automotive service, diesel technology, welding, fabrication, or general trades, they graduate with the skills and confidence necessary to succeed.

But this program is far more than vocational training—it is a pathway to independence, stability, and self-sufficiency. Many participants arrive rebuilding their lives, transitioning back into the workforce, or seeking trades experience for the first time. In the structured environment of our garage, they learn teamwork, discipline, punctuality, craftsmanship, and the responsibility that comes with working on real vehicles that impact real families. Participants earn certifications, gain resume-building experience, and develop the professionalism today’s employers are looking for.

A cornerstone of this program is our Low-Cost Car Program, created to support families, seniors, and community members who need reliable transportation but cannot afford traditional market prices. Vehicles are donated by individuals, businesses, or community partners, then repaired, inspected, and restored by our trainees under professional supervision. Each vehicle becomes both a hands-on learning project and a lifeline for someone in need.

Once repairs are complete, these cars are made available at significantly reduced cost to qualifying households—ensuring that safe, dependable transportation is within reach for those working to improve their circumstances. Reliable transportation is often the missing link for employment, medical appointments, education, childcare, and everyday responsibilities. By providing that link, we help families regain control of their lives while giving trainees the opportunity to apply their skills to meaningful, life-changing work.

Beyond automotive repair, this program includes training in welding, metal fabrication, equipment operation, and foundational construction trades. These additional skills expand employment options and help participants discover new strengths and interests. Whether repairing a donated vehicle, welding components for tiny home construction, or learning tool safety and shop management, trainees gain a well-rounded technical foundation that opens the door to a wide range of career pathways.

The Auto & Trades Garage Program strengthens the entire community. It gives people the skills to earn a living wage, supports local families with affordable vehicles, and fosters a sense of accomplishment that comes from doing work that matters. Every repaired engine, every rebuilt part, and every restored vehicle represents someone’s new beginning—a chance to drive forward into a brighter future.

By combining skill-building, service, and opportunity, the Auto & Trades Garage Program embodies Iron Trail Workforce Foundation’s mission: empowering individuals to rebuild their lives while making New Mexico stronger, safer, and more connected.
