Senior Support Services & Home Repair Program

At Iron Trail Workforce Foundation, we believe that every senior deserves to age with dignity, safety, and peace of mind. Our Senior Support Services & Home Repair Program was created to address one of the most urgent yet overlooked needs in our communities: helping older adults remain safe, independent, and comfortable in their own homes. By combining skilled workforce training with service-driven outreach, we provide essential support to seniors while empowering trainees with real-world experience in the building trades, repair work, and community service.

As many seniors in New Mexico face mobility challenges, fixed incomes, or a lack of reliable support systems, even minor home issues can quickly become major threats to their safety and well-being. Leaking roofs, broken steps, unstable railings, faulty wiring, and non-functioning heaters are not just inconveniences—they are hazards. Our program bridges this gap by offering low-cost or no-cost repairs, safety upgrades, and essential home maintenance for seniors who otherwise cannot afford or access these services.

Our workforce trainees, supervised by skilled professionals, perform a wide range of repairs and improvements including accessibility modifications, grab bar installation, flooring and trip-hazard fixes, electrical and plumbing repairs, weatherization, appliance troubleshooting, minor construction, and general home maintenance. Through these projects, trainees gain practical experience in carpentry, electrical basics, plumbing fundamentals, safety protocols, and problem-solving—skills that directly prepare them for long-term careers in trades and construction.

But beyond technical work, this program is about human connection. For many seniors, we are the friendly faces who show up, listen, and help without judgment. Our team builds relationships, checks on health and safety needs, and ensures that older adults know they are valued members of the community. This personal connection often becomes as meaningful as the repairs themselves.

In addition to home repairs, we assist with:

  • Light yard work & cleanup

  • Mobility and accessibility improvements

  • Seasonal safety checks (heaters, coolers, steps, lighting)

  • Smoke detector installation and battery replacement

  • Health and wellness referrals

  • Transportation connectivity when possible

  • Community referrals and resource navigation

As our program grows, we plan to integrate additional supports such as senior meal delivery through our Culinary & Community Kitchen, wellness checks, and collaboration with local agencies, tribal communities, and senior centers.

The Senior Support Services & Home Repair Program is built on service, skill, and solidarity. Every repaired handrail, every fixed heater, and every improved living space represents more than a task completed—it reflects the heart of our mission. Seniors feel safer in their homes. Trainees gain meaningful experience and pride in their work. And the community becomes stronger through connection, compassion, and shared action.

This program is a testament to what happens when workforce development and community care come together. By supporting seniors and supporting our trainees, we are building a healthier, safer, and more connected New Mexico—one home, one repair, and one person at a time.
